Product Overview

Also known as Broad Beans

About- This heirloom seed, native to North Africa, is one of the worlds oldest cultivated plants. Tall bush type plants produce pods each containing 3-5 large, 1 inch long green beans. Harvest pods in the green shell stage. Fava beans perform better in cool weather and should be planted at the same time as peas. Also used as a nitrogen fixing garden cover crop.

When and Where to Plant- Select a sunny location and plant in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. For best results, loosen soil with spade or fork, fertilize with vegetable food and smooth over with a rake. Firm soil over seed and keep soil moist.

Care and Harvest- Grows best in a soil with a pH between 6 and 7, and just a light application of garden fertilizer. Water at ground level to reduce the probability of disease. For green shell stage, pick beans when the seeds have formed and the pod is firm when squeezed. For dried beans, allow the pods to dry on the stalk before picking.
