Our Farm Story

Lar-Lyn Farms is a family operation that began in PA in 1989. The farm got its start in vegetable and mushroom production, beef cattle, and Haflinger horses.  As times changed land became scarce in Pennsylvania . With much consideration, we made the decision in 2005 to purchase land and move to Virginia. Here, we would continue vegetable and mushroom production as well as our beef cattle.

As our roots were planted in Virginia, we began to work with people in the community.  We realized there was a great need for the unique equipment we were using that was built by the Amish. Lar-Lyn once again recognized opportunity knocking and changed gears. We started a locally owned and operated farm supply store offering our customers equipment, irrigation systems and kits, greenhouses and supplies, vegetables and mushrooms, tools, cover crops and vegetable seeds, fertilizers (bagged or bulk), mushroom compost,  imported hay and other farm supplies.  We stock both organic and non-organic growers’ inventory. Sharing our knowledge, building great relationships, we became a lasting part of this amazing community and learned so much along the way.

The next step was to reach out to other farm communities because of our great customer loyalty and service.  We decided to have 2  locations. Our home base in Dillwyn VA and the 2nd location in Charlotte Courthouse at the Southside Produce Auction. This addition gave many current and new customers opportunities, convenience and help with many farming obstacles. This was a wonderful decision! So many amazing relationships and new connections daily!

Most recently, in 2019, Virginia lawmakers freed Industrial Hemp for farmers. Now, turning over a new leaf of opportunity in our community. Many of our customers wanted to be a part of producing this new crop. So just as families expand, Lar-Lyn made the decision to do the same and partner with Harold and Margaret Collins, natives of Cumberland and Buckingham VA.  They will ensure our dreams and our hard work will now continue and be the next generation to carry the Lar-Lyn touch. Both with strong work ethics and the belief in community. We saw a new way to unify and give farmers a brand-new fighting chance! Harold is a 3rd Generation Contractor who specializes in excavation, ponds, farming, agriculture, commercial and residential building. He is also one of the largest employers in Cumberland VA. Giving our customers another option for land clearing, water sources, building pads, and greenhouse installations. You name it, Harold can get it done!  Margaret also has a strong background in business. She’s been a business owner over 20 years and currently owns 4 businesses in Farmville VA. Her passion is bringing all people of all ages back to a realization and awareness of farming. As we strive together to cultivate this new crop, we will work even harder to ensure equipment, supplies and consultation to make farmers more successful. Our Lar-Lyn family also plans to offer on-site consulting, farm visits  and create customized hemp and vegetable production bundles. We want to save you money!!! Along with new opportunities, we also face new challenges and our plan is to face them head on and right by your side.  With an open mind, bringing resources to the table, networking and educational forums in Industrial Hemp production. Collaboration will be a must! As another American Farmer once said, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall,’ Abraham Lincoln. At Lar-Lyn we are farmers too! Because of our committed and customer loyalty together we’ll face the hurdles our customers face to find the answers.

We look forward to this new partnership and the added value it will bring to our customers and our family.  Our plans are to have a new catalog each year, a website to add new items throughout the year with better access to products and shipping options. We thank you for all your grace, patience, encouragement, continued support, customer loyalty and we appreciate your business. We look forward to serving and growing with you in the future. We can may it better together!
